My paintings of scenes in and around the village of Bellport, Long Island, New York, were painted during the decade between 2014 to 2024. They articulate my love of the seaside town that’s managed to preserve its charm over the years.
Founded in 1664, the village of Bellport was reached by horse and carriage. The voyage of almost two days from New York City was punctuated by an overnight stay in Babylon as fresh horses were taken on. The sea air and scrub forests were a relief for those who could afford it, from the soot and grime of the coal-fired cities and remains so to this day.
My family spent summers at our family compound overlooking Quantuck Bay in nearby Quiogue starting in the late Eighteen-hundreds. Many idyllic childhood summers were spent there; the Long Island coast and its hamlets and atmospheres are burnished in my memory and these paintings.
I am grateful to my friends and patrons, Jim Holt and Jon McMillan who’ve collected my work over the years and have put up with me as a guest countless times.
